Royan Institute is a public non-profitable organization which is affiliated to Academic Center for Education, Culture and Research (ACECR) and was established in 1991 as a research institute for Reproductive Biomedicine and infertility treatments. This institute acts as leader of Stem Cell research and also one of the best clinics for infertility treatment. It has 46 scientific members and 186 lab technicians. Royan consists of three research institutes, each focused on different fields of research.

- Royan Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Technology (RI-SCBT):
RI-SCBT, first, as the "Department of Stem Cells" was established in 2002 to advance researches on biology and technology of Embryonic stem Cells, Induced pluripotent stem cells, Germ line Stem Cells, Adult Stem Cells, Cancer Stem Cells, and Cord Blood Stem Cells. The Institute is providing a comprehensive and coordinated "bench to bedside" approach to regenerative medicine, including a greater understanding of fundamental biology of stem cells, developmental biology, tissue engineering programs, the development of translational research of stem cell therapeutics, and administration of new cell therapies approaches that can restore tissue function to patients.
-Royan Institute for Reproductive Biomedicine (RI-RB):
Royan Institute for Reproductive Biomedicine, consists of six departments and one clinic actively working on different aspects of infertility and the development of new methods for infertility treatment. Its vision is to improve the population’s health through infertility treatments and giving infertile families the hope of having children. In this regard, RI-RB’s mission is to research different aspects of infertility and its treatment in order to increase the success rate alongside improving embryo health.
The Clinical Services of Royan Institute Infertility Clinic Center:
Royan Institute was established in 1991 as a non-governmental, non-profit center for the treatment of infertility. High level research in the areas of Reproductive Biomedicine, Stem Cell and Cloning were soon started which made Royan Institute a prominent research center and an advanced infertility clinic, not only in Iran but also in the region. Now, after more than a decade, Royan Infertility Clinic is one of the most prominent centers providing progressive ART services with high success rate comparable to the world's best centers.
Royan Infertility Clinic is proud of hosting over ten thousand infertile couples annually. Numerous infertile couples are under treatment in this infertility clinic center. Besides embracing the significant number of Iranian infertile couples, Royan Infertility Clinic assumes a considerable number of infertile couples from neighboring countries and even continents of Europe, America, Africa and the Pacific.
The number of Royan infertility clinic patients faces a continuous growth due to the standard infertility treatment services and high rate of treatment success by efforts of expert specialists using modern technology in female infertility, male infertility, embryology, genetics, and imaging fields.

· Female Infertility Clinic
Advanced methods for diagnosis and treatment of infertile women are provided by high level professionals, doctors and medical staff. An appointment with a fertility specialist is the first step for assessment of female partner which includes taking medical history, physical examination and organizing any necessary tests, imaging or operations such as hormonal profile, laparoscopy, hysteroscopy or hysterosalpingography.
· Male Infertility Clinic
The most suitable treatment is determined only after assessment of male partner which begins with an andrologist visit. Taking medical history, physical examination and performing necessary tests including semen analysis and hormonal profile are done during first appointment. The patient will have to undergo some surgical operations like PESA/TESE in case of Azoospermia to provide sperms. The treatment will be soon started considering both partners conditions.
· Psycho- Social Support and Consultation Center
For many couples, infertility signifies the most severe emotional crisis in their lives. The purpose of professional psychosocial support provided by psychiatrists is to help couples cope with distress, feel better and maintain strong relationships. Fertility specialists will also help the couple with making decisions about the fertility treatment options and select the most suitable one.
· Genetics Clinic
In this clinic, patients will have a discussion with a genetic counselor about the risk of genetic disorders causing infertility or risk of further birth defects. Genetic counselor provides necessary information about their condition which allows patients to make informed decisions about their infertility treatment. Certain genetic tests may be performed according to family history, personal health history or ethnic background.
· Reproductive Imaging Department
Imaging methods like routine ultrasound, 3D/ 4D, Trans Rectal, transvaginal and Color Doppler ultrasound, hysterosonography and hysterosalpingography are used as effective methods to determine the cause of infertility.Fetal abnormalities may also be diagnosed with imaging procedures during the pregnancy.
· Clinical Embryology Laboratory
Well experienced embryologists and laboratory professionals use progressive methods to perform invitro fertilization (IVF), Intrecytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) and cryopreservation of the gametes and embryo in this laboratory. Laser Hatching is another advanced procedure which increases the chance of a successful embryo implantation and is performed in necessary cases.
· Medical Laboratory
The laboratory performs hormone assay for men and women, sperm analysis and evaluation of infectious diseases as well as other diagnostic and pregnancy follow up tests.
· Operation Rooms
All surgical operations necessary for infertility treatment in both male and female partners are performed in well equipped operating rooms by high level surgeons and experienced staff.
Regenerative Medicine is a collection of applied data from biology, such as growth factors, cell therapy, tissue engineering and organ transplantation with the aim of reducing tissue destruction related mortality. Currently in spite of advances in identification of growth factors involved in the normal regeneration of the body or improvement in tissue engineering and organ transplantation, cell therapy with the simple idea of replacing the missing parts by using stem cells is still the best choice.
The active research groups in the department include:
- Skin disorders
After providing service for vitiligo and wrinkle patients using injection of cultured melanocytes, keratinocytes and fibroblasts, an important action of this group focuses on doing clinical trials stages burn and also to find new methods to treat vitiligo. This group follows two purposes in stem cell therapy for patients with high-grade skin burns. First, decreasing scar formation following damage and second increasing regeneration in damaged tissue.
- Cardiovascular disorders
Cardiovascular diseases involve the blood vessels, the heart, or both. Cardiovascular Disease Research Group is one of the oldest groups in the Department of Regenerative Medicine. The development of available treatments and application of new therapeutic methods are as primary goals of this group for treatment of diseases which are the most common and deadly diseases in Iran. The use of bone marrow stem cells in children with heart problems and injection of these cells in patients with ischemic valvular defects are as the most important studies which are designed and implemented to develop our current methods.
- Bone and Joint disorders
The musculoskeletal system consists of the body's bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, and cartilage. Numerous studies are being conducted in orthopedics group including benign bone cysts, non-union complications following fractures, avascular necrosis of neck of femur, cartilage avulsion and osteomyelitis. Among these disorders, stem cell therapy for osteoarthritis is undergoing its last steps. The unit investigates orthopedic conditions, including femur fractures and hip infections, and related treatments.
- Neuromuscular disorders
Neuromuscular disorders affect the nerves that control your voluntary muscles. Voluntary muscles are the ones you can control, like in your arms and legs. Your nerve cells, also called neurons, send the messages that control these muscles. When the neurons become unhealthy or die, communication between your nervous system and muscles breaks down. As a result, your muscles weaken and waste away. The weakness can lead to twitching, cramps, aches and pains, and joint and movement problems. Sometimes it also affects heart function and your ability to breathe.
At Royan Institute the Neurology group and the researchers have tested the efficacy and safety of stem cell transplantation in multiple sclerosis (MS), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and cerebral palsy.
- Kidney disorders
most of Royan Institute activities have focused on the administration cell therapy in patients with incontinence, renal transplantation and acute renal failure. Patients will be treated in the clinical trial for evaluation of the effect of intramuscular injection of muscle stem cells in improving incontinence.
